Sustainability at EJ Water & How You Can Help

April 24, 2025

At EJ Water Cooperative, we believe that protecting our planet’s most precious resource isn’t just good business—it’s our responsibility. This Earth Day, we want to share some of the sustainability initiatives we’ve implemented and provide practical ways you can join us in conserving water and energy at home.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Harnessing Solar Power

Our Gila Water Treatment Plant is now partially powered by solar panels, reducing our carbon footprint while maintaining reliable service. This renewable energy source has helped us operate more efficiently while decreasing our environmental impact.

Building Stronger Communities Through Partnerships

We’ve joined forces with other utilities to innovate and address shared challenges. These cross-utility partnerships allow us to implement best practices, share resources, and develop more sustainable approaches to water management.

Removing Lead Service Lines

We’re actively working to identify and replace lead service lines throughout our service area. This initiative not only protects public health but also modernizes our infrastructure for long-term sustainability.

Investing in Our Future

Our commitment extends beyond immediate solutions. We’re making strategic investments in long-term infrastructure improvements to ensure reliable service for generations to come while minimizing waste and resource usage.

Sustainability Starts at Home: What You Can Do

Conserve Water Daily
  • Fix leaky faucets promptly
  • Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators
  • Only run full loads in dishwashers and washing machines
  • Turn off the water while brushing teeth or washing dishes
Create a Water-Wise Landscape
  • Choose native plants that require less water and maintenance
  • Install rain barrels to collect and reuse rainwater for gardens
  • Water lawns and gardens during early morning or evening hours to reduce evaporation
  • Use mulch around plants to retain moisture
Reduce Your Energy-Water Footprint
  • Did you know that water treatment and transportation requires significant energy? By conserving water, you’re also saving energy.
  • Consider energy-efficient appliances when upgrading
  • Insulate your water heater and pipes to reduce energy usage
Check for Lead Pipes

If your home was built before 1986, you might have lead pipes or fixtures. We encourage all members to:

  • Learn how to identify lead pipes (they have a dull gray color and scratch easily)
  • Request a service line inspection if you’re unsure
  • Contact us for resources and support on lead service line replacement

Join Us in Creating a Sustainable Future

At EJ Water Cooperative, we believe that sustainability is a shared responsibility. This Earth Day, we invite you to partner with us in protecting our water resources. Even small changes in daily habits can make a significant difference when we work together.

Our commitment to sustainable practices is ongoing, and we continue to explore innovative ways to serve our community while protecting our environment. Thank you for being part of our journey toward a more sustainable future.

Together, we can ensure clean, safe water for generations to come.
