Field Operations Technician (Entry-Level)

Job Summary
The Field Operations Technician is responsible for supporting the daily operations, monitoring, and maintenance of water treatment and distribution systems. This entry-level role assists in ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant treatment of drinking water or wastewater in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. The technician will perform routine inspections, basic maintenance, sampling, and operational support under the supervision of senior operators.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist in operating and monitoring water treatment plant systems, including pumps, valves, motors, filters, and chemical feed systems
• Conduct routine inspections of equipment and report irregularities
• Collect water samples for laboratory analysis and perform basic field testing (pH, chlorine residual, turbidity, etc.)
• Record operational data, meter readings, and system performance information accurately
• Support preventive maintenance activities on mechanical and electrical equipment
• Clean and maintain plant facilities, tanks, and work areas
• Follow all safety procedures, including confined space and lockout/tagout protocols
• Assist with troubleshooting minor operational issues and escalate complex problems to supervisors
• Maintain compliance with environmental and regulatory standards
• Respond to operational alarms or emergency situations as directed
• Washing trucks and equipment when needed
• Keeping the Operations building floors clean
Location
Shelby County or Montgomery County IL
Schedule
Monday - Friday 7 am - 3pm, plus on-call rotation
Pay
$21-$25 per hour

Licensing and Certification
High school diploma or GED (technical or vocational training preferred)
0-2 years of related experience
Valid drivers license
Water or wastewater license is preferred but not required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Basic understanding of mechanical systems and equipment
Strong attention to detail and record-keeping skills
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Basic computer skills for data entry and reporting
Ability to work on-call rotation, weekends and holidays as required
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Ability to work in varying environmental conditions
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Outside environment or industrial water treatment plant
Exposure to chemicals, machinery, noise and outdoor weather conditions
May require confined space entry and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
