The Association of Regional Water Organizations (ARWO) recently concluded its 2025 Annual Summit, bringing together over 50 water industry leaders to address critical challenges and emerging trends shaping the future of regional water management. EJ Water was amongst these industry leaders to learn more about regional water shifts, and how to stay ahead of them. “Attending and presenting at the ARWO Summit in Tampa was a great experience. Laura and I had the opportunity to share insights on EJ’s CIS transition, Member Engagement, and Contract Services. We highlighted our move to a CIS system, explaining its impact on both EJ and our members. Additionally, we discussed how EJ engages with members through platforms like social media, public events, and our annual meeting, as well as the various contract services we provide. It was interesting to learn from other water utilities, each with unique perspectives and operational approaches. This was my first time attending the conference, and I enjoyed the opportunity to connect, learn, and share EJ’s journey.” – Erica Worman, Member Services
Rural Water Rates vs. Municipal Rates: A Critical Discussion
One of the most pressing topics at the summit was the ongoing disparity between rural water rates and municipal water rates. Experts discussed the significant challenges faced by rural water cooperatives in maintaining infrastructure and providing affordable services. Key insights included:
- Rural water systems often serve fewer customers over larger geographic areas, leading to higher per-customer infrastructure and maintenance costs.
- Municipalities typically benefit from economies of scale, allowing them to spread infrastructure costs across a larger and more densely populated customer base.
- The summit explored innovative pricing models and potential funding mechanisms to help rural water cooperatives address affordability challenges.
- Discussions highlighted the need for creative solutions, including potential state and federal support, shared infrastructure, and regionalization strategies.
Tim Allred, Chief Operations Officer, discussed the ever-growing threats, concerns, and challenges of Cybersecurity. “We dealt with the thought that it’s not a matter of “if” but “when” it happens. With the increase of technology and the growth of AI, Cybersecurity awareness is a must for us all.”
